If your tire pressure light suddenly comes on during the first cold morning of fall, there’s a good chance nothing is wrong with your tires.
It may simply be Kansas City weather doing what Kansas City weather does.
One day it’s 75 degrees. Two days later, you’re scraping frost off the windshield—and suddenly that little tire-pressure warning light is staring at you from the dashboard.
So, why does it happen?
As the temperature outside drops, the air inside your tires contracts. That causes your tire pressure to drop, too.
A good rule of thumb is that tire pressure changes by about 1 PSI for every 10-degree change in temperature. So when we get one of those classic Kansas City temperature swings—say, from 70 degrees during the day to 40 overnight—your tires can lose several PSI without having a leak.
That's also why tire-pressure warning lights seem to appear everywhere once fall arrives.
No.
Cold weather may explain why the pressure dropped, but you still want your tires inflated to the vehicle manufacturer's recommended pressure.
Underinflated tires can affect handling, braking, fuel economy and tire wear. And if one tire is significantly lower than the others—or keeps losing pressure after it's been corrected—that can indicate a leak, puncture or another issue that needs attention.
Your vehicle's recommended tire pressure is usually listed on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb. Don't automatically use the PSI printed on the tire itself—that's not necessarily the recommended pressure for your vehicle.
Yes. If your tires are below the manufacturer's recommended pressure, bring them back to the proper PSI.
Don't intentionally leave them low because you expect the temperature to warm up later.
Ideally, tire pressure should be checked when the tires are cold, meaning the vehicle hasn't been driven much recently. Driving heats the tires and temporarily increases the pressure, which can give you a different reading.
And don't forget the other three tires just because only one triggered the warning light. A big temperature drop can affect all four.
This is where cold weather and an actual tire problem can look very similar.
If you add air and the same tire repeatedly loses pressure, don't assume it's just the weather. You could have a small puncture, a leaking valve stem, a bead leak or another issue that needs to be checked by a tire professional.
Another clue is the difference between the tires. If all four drop a couple of PSI after a major cold front, temperature is a likely culprit. If three are at 35 PSI and one is at 26, something else is probably going on.
At Costa Oil – 10 Minute Oil Change in Parkville, checking your tire pressure is part of our complimentary service while we're changing your oil.
We'll also check and top off accessible fluids as part of our multi-point inspection, so you can stay in your vehicle while we take care of the basics.
No appointment is necessary, and most oil changes take about 10 minutes.
So when that first Kansas City cold snap arrives and your tire-pressure light suddenly comes on, don't panic—but don't ignore it either.
It might simply be the weather telling you that fall has officially arrived.
