Synthetic Blend vs. Full Synthetic: What Does Your Car Really Need?

October 12, 2026•3 min read

If you've ever been asked what type of oil you want during an oil change and thought, I have absolutely no idea, you're definitely not alone.

Synthetic blend? Full synthetic? Different viscosities? Manufacturer specifications?

For most drivers, motor oil isn't something you spend much time thinking about—and honestly, you shouldn't have to become an oil expert just to get an oil change.

So what's the difference between synthetic blend and full synthetic, and how do you know which one your vehicle needs?

What Is Synthetic Blend Oil?

Synthetic blend motor oil is exactly what the name suggests: a combination of conventional base oils and synthetic base oils.

It provides more protection and performance than traditional conventional oil while generally being a good option for many vehicles that don't require full synthetic.

Depending on the vehicle, its age, engine design and manufacturer requirements, synthetic blend may be perfectly appropriate.

What Is Full Synthetic Oil?

Full synthetic motor oil uses highly refined and engineered base oils designed to provide consistent performance across a wide range of driving conditions and temperatures.

It typically offers better resistance to breakdown at high temperatures and better flow in cold temperatures. That's one reason full synthetic has become increasingly common—and why many newer vehicles require it.

Modern engines also tend to operate with tighter tolerances, turbochargers and other technology that can place greater demands on motor oil.

But here's the important part:

Just because full synthetic is a great oil doesn't mean you need to figure out on your own whether your vehicle requires it.

How Do You Know Which Oil Your Car Needs?

Your vehicle manufacturer has already done much of that work for you.

Oil requirements can vary by vehicle and engine, including the recommended viscosity—such as 0W-20 or 5W-30—as well as particular oil specifications or approvals.

Your owner's manual is one place to find that information, but if terms like viscosity and manufacturer specifications make your eyes glaze over, don't worry.

That's our job. 😊

At Costa Oil – 10 Minute Oil Change in Parkville, we check your vehicle's specifications to determine the appropriate oil for your engine.

Is Full Synthetic Always the Better Choice?

This is where the answer gets a little more nuanced.

Full synthetic offers excellent performance and protection, and it's required by many vehicles. But there are also vehicles for which a synthetic blend is an appropriate choice.

The goal isn't simply to choose whichever oil has “full synthetic” written on it.

The goal is to make sure your engine has an oil that meets its requirements.

That's why we carry both synthetic blend and full synthetic at our Parkville location. It allows us to make sure we have the oil your vehicle needs while continuing to keep oil changes as affordable as possible.
